Alfred

A voice-first Mac butler with two brains — Claude in the cloud or a fully private local model

Alfred
01

Problem

Voice assistants on the Mac are either toys that parse a fixed list of commands or cloud services that hear everything you say. Neither will read the error on your screen, draft an email in Mail, search your own notes or hand a coding task to Claude Code and neither gives you a genuinely private option when the conversation shouldn't leave the machine.

02

Approach

Alfred is a native macOS assistant built in Swift & SwiftUI, driven entirely by voice, a wake word, a hotkey or a click on the orb. He runs on one of two brains, switchable per conversation; Claude in the cloud for capability or a local model through Ollama where speech recognition, inference & web search all stay on the Mac. Tools cover screen capture, clipboard, calendar & reminders, timers, email drafting, file search, AppleScript & Shortcuts, dictation into any app and a persistent second-brain vault he can consult and add to.

03

Result

A butler you talk to like a person, not a command parser. He answers aloud in a sentence or three, writes the long version on screen when asked, remembers past conversations per brain and dispatches real work to Claude Code then reports back when it's done. Local mode is a deliberate choice rather than a fallback, nothing leaves the machine, while the cloud brain even tracks what it has cost you this month, in pounds.
